Your complete Moreton Island Day Trip guide

All the details about your upcoming adventure in one place

Your Moreton Island Day Trip Guide

Moreton island day trip tours depart daily from Brisbane, crossing Moreton Bay by ferry to Queensland's third-largest sand island. Tangalooma shipwrecks, towering sand dunes, and wild dolphin feeding make this Moreton Island coastal excursion a full day of exploration. Secure moreton island day trip tickets early in peak season, as spots on guided 4WD and snorkeling packages fill quickly.

Moreton Island is the world's third-largest sand island — 38 kilometres of dune systems, freshwater lagoons, and coastal heath sitting just 40 km northeast of Brisbane. Fifteen deliberately scuttled vessels form the Tangalooma Wrecks, now a coral-encrusted snorkel site teeming with wobbegong sharks and sea turtles.

A Moreton Island Day Trip delivers access to these ecosystems without overnight camping logistics.

Today the island draws visitors for moreton island snorkeling at the wrecks, desert-style sandboarding on Mount Tempest's slopes, and guided kayak circuits through Moreton Bay Marine Park. Whether you search for moreton island snorkelling options or a moreton island snorkel adventure closer to shore, moreton island day trip tours departing from Brisbane or the Gold Coast cover the crossing, gear, and guiding in a single fare.

Dress code

Wear swimwear with a rash vest for UV protection while snorkelling at Moreton Island. Lightweight breathable clothing and closed-toe shoes are recommended for bushwalking tracks. Sand can reach extreme temperatures in summer, so reef shoes or sandals are useful on the beach.

Bags & security

There are no bag checks or security screenings to access Moreton Island National Park. Bring a dry bag or waterproof pouch for electronics during water activities. Keep valuables secured in your vehicle or with your tour group, as there are no lockers on the island.

Photography

Photography is unrestricted across Moreton Island National Park, including underwater cameras at the Tangalooma Wrecks. Drone use requires a permit from Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service. The best light for landscape shots at Cape Moreton Lighthouse is during golden hour.

Families & strollers

Children of all ages are welcome on a moreton island day trip, with shallow wading areas near the Tangalooma Wrecks suitable for young swimmers. Many tour operators provide child-sized snorkel equipment. Sandboarding on the desert dunes is popular with children aged 6 and above.

Accessibility

Beach wheelchair access is limited due to soft sand terrain across Moreton Island. The Tangalooma Island Resort jetty area offers the most accessible flat ground. Visitors with mobility needs should contact tour operators in advance to confirm vessel accessibility and onshore support.

Food & drink

Bring sufficient drinking water (minimum 2 litres per person) as fresh water is scarce on Moreton Island. The Tangalooma Island Resort has a café and restaurant, but independent day-trippers should pack lunch and snacks. No rubbish bins are provided in the national park — carry all waste out.

Not allowed

× Glass containers × Fireworks × Generators in camping zones × Cats and dogs × Firearms × Spearfishing equipment in Marine Park zones × Jet skis without permit × Chainsaws × Quad bikes without permit × Collection of flora or fauna

Worth every minute

We booked a moreton island day trip tour through a local operator and spent the morning snorkeling the Tangalooma wrecks — visibility was easily five metres and we spotted wobbegong sharks resting on the sand. The ferry crossing from Brisbane took about 75 minutes each way, which felt quick given how remote the island looks once you arrive.

Sand dunes were a highlight

The sandboarding down the desert section was the physical highlight of our Moreton Island excursion. Fine golden sand gets everywhere but the speed you pick up on the steep face made it worthwhile. Our guide mentioned the dunes shift several metres each year due to prevailing winds.

Good but tiring

A full moreton island day trip packs a lot into one day — snorkeling, 4WD beach driving, dolphin feeding at dusk — so be ready to move quickly between stops. I wished we had an extra thirty minutes at Blue Lagoon because the freshwater was perfectly clear and cool after the heat. Still a solid day out from Brisbane.

Crystal clear water

Tangalooma wrecks lived up to the hype. Schools of silver trevally circled the hulls and the coral growth on the metal was surprisingly colourful for a temperate marine park. If you are comparing moreton island day trip tickets from different companies, check whether snorkel gear is included — ours was.

Dolphins at sunset

Feeding wild bottlenose dolphins from the jetty at dusk was a calm, almost meditative experience after a full day of activity. The water in Moreton Bay was glassy and the dolphins approached within arm's reach. Our guide explained the feeding program has run since the 1990s.

Great for families

We took our two kids aged 8 and 11 on a Brisbane island day tour and they loved every segment, especially the 4WD ride along the eastern beach. The guides were patient and knowledgeable about the local ecology, pointing out sea eagle nests in the casuarina trees.

Exceeded expectations

I had one free day in Brisbane and chose a moreton island day trip over the usual city sights. Cape Moreton lighthouse at the northern tip gave panoramic views of the Pacific, and the rocky headland felt wild and untouched. Highly recommend for anyone who enjoys coastal landscapes.

Rushed schedule

The island itself is gorgeous — white sand, clear water, native bush — but the moreton island day trip tours format means you are always watching the clock. We only had twenty minutes at the lighthouse lookout before loading back into the bus. I would prefer an overnight stay next time.

Snorkeling was top-notch

Visibility at the Tangalooma wrecks was around six metres on our visit and we counted at least four species of reef fish within the first wreck alone. The moreton island day trip ticket price felt fair given it covered ferry, lunch, and all activities. Bring reef-safe sunscreen — the sun reflects hard off the white sand.

Beautiful lagoon swim

Blue Lagoon on Moreton Island is a hidden gem — tea-tree-stained freshwater surrounded by paperbark forest, completely still and warm in the shallows. Our day tour to Moreton Island wrapped up with dolphin feeding, which was a gentle way to end a physically active day.
